I’ll be at the Edbookfest this year to talk about my book, White Chrysanthemum, along with Wu Ming-Yi and his wonderful book, The Stolen Bicycle. I’ll also be supporting Amnesty International’s Imprisoned Writers Series by reading from the work of Freedom From Torture survivors, along with Antti Tuomainen. DIGGING INTO TRAUMA

Heartbreaking family sagas are played out against the backdrop of social revolution in the nail-biting historical dramas by Mary Lynn Bracht and Wu Ming-Yi. Set in Korea, Bracht’s White Chrysanthemum features two sisters suddenly separated by war while Wu’s The Stolen Bicycle has a novelist tracking the mystery behind his father’s disappearance when he was a boy.

Every survivor of torture has different needs. Freedom from Torture offers counselling and therapeutic creative writing services in centres across the UK. Today’s writing reflects ideas of sisterhood and female rights and comes from Freedom from Torture survivors. Reading the work are Mary Lynn Bracht and Antti Tuomainen.

Haenyeo Statue on Udo Island, South Korea

The Litro World Series Summer Literary & Arts Festival ’18 is this weekend in London and will focus on India & South Korea. Join me on Saturday, 26 May (3:00-4:00PM) as I’ll be in conversation with novelists Uzma Aslam Khan (The Geometry of God) and Manu Pillai (The Ivory Throne: Chronicles of the House of Travancore). The session will be chaired by prize winning novelist and scriptwriter Qaisra Shahraz. We will read from our books, discuss our motivations behind writing them, and give you a chance to ask questions. I’ll also have two free paperback copies of White Chrysanthemum to give away if you haven’t bought your copy yet!

Today is pub day for the Italian translation of White Chrysanthemum! I’m so excited to announce that Figlie del Mare is now available for Italian readers. My amazing publishers at Longanesi have produced this beautiful cover, which evokes loneliness and longing but also coveys delicate beauty.

It’s pub day for the Swedish translation of White Chrysanthemum! My wonderful publishers at Bookmark Forlag created a stunning cover for Vit Krysantemum. I can’t wait for readers in Sweden to read Hana and Emi’s story.

The Danish translation of White Chrysanthemum is now available! The cover is amazing and depicts the scene when Hana is taken away from the only life she has ever known on Jeju Island and sent to a military brothel in Manchuria. It is a pivotal moment that tears two sisters apart, forcing them onto two very different journeys. Thank you to my wonderful publishers at Gads Forlag for the opportunity to share this story with Danish readers around the world.
